Nearly 2m hectares of Koala habitat have been bulldozed since 2011 – despite political promises to protect species
Logging of native forest in the proposed Great Koala National Park (GKNP), which is just to the west of us, has intensified since the Minns government won 2023 election with the commitment to deliver this new sanctuary. More than 7,000 hectares have been logged in the planned park since then. And it looks like the government won’t include all areas with high Koala populations.
It is time for the NSW Government to declare the full 176,000 hectares assessed as the Great Koala National Park. The ongoing logging of Native Forest comes at a huge cost to the taxpayer and for the future of animals like the Koala, Gliders and Owls. Time and time again Forestry Corporation has been found to be non-compliant. Logging public native forests is so shortsighted.
There are also other issues, such as mining. The natural environment is under assault from all sides: development, land clearing by farmers, forestry and mining.
How to keep hope? I watch the light shifting in the forest.
