Shearwaters

Nothing is as inanimate as life extinguished,

the incoming tide is bullying the matted fabric,

a wing waves briefly, death has invaded thousands of kilometres

and every few metres of this beach all the way to Wenonah Headland.

If they encounter severe weather, or have trouble locating sufficient fish stocks along the way, they struggle to survive. If some are still breathing little can be done, they have lost half their body weight by now and attempts at rehabilitation are invariably futile.
