Grass trees flowering
The grass tree Xanthorrhoea is a uniquely Australian and easily identifiable. Slow growing, usually on poor sandy soil, bushfires burn off the needle like leaves and blacken the stump, but then it quickly sprouts and the fire helps flower development.
There are 28 species of Xanthorrhoea and all are native to Australia, and nearly half occurring in NSW. The ones here have short flowerspikes and very short trunks.
Other species form, over time, huge trunks and long flowerspikes.
