Hares are back in the headlights. I wade across the tributary that is usually dry, now up past my knees.

A racket of Kookaburras, then Magpies take their turn, I whistle back at their carolling, haunted.

A new lagoon, new day, a thick wall of sand, that won’t last.
Sun rise is a flash.

The incoming tide etching fractures and interference.

Later it’s down to the Nambucca, and three Darters drying out close to each other.
Darter 1

Magnificent birds, weird birds. Gould also called it the New Holland devil-bird.
Darter 2

Darter 3

A wingspan of 120 cm.
