Out and about, art in Sydney
What is so interesting about revisiting well known galleries is seeing a painting anew for the first time,or even an artist. I have never been into Vlaminck, and had sailed past this painting probably a hundred times, but this time the sail caught my eye. The wonderfully articulated rough working of the paint on the sail caught my passing eye and helped reveal the entire landscape.
Along with Henri Matisse and André Derain, de Vlaminck showed work in the 1905 Salon d’Automne, an alternative exhibition to the official Salon where a hostile critic compared their work to that of wild beasts (fauves).
