Ludwig Leichhardt set out from the Queensland frontier in April 1848, aiming to traverse the continent from East to West, the goal was the Swan River settlement in Western Australia. The expedition left Cogoon Station, the most westerly property on the Darling Downs, on the 3rd of April 1848. One of the shepherds, asked where they were going. Leichhardt replied: ‘To the setting sun.’ His last known words.

John McDouall Stuart led the first successful expedition (his sixth, third major one) in 1861 to traverse the Australian mainland from south to north and return, through the centre of the continent. He said, ‘If this country is settled, it will be one of the finest colonies under the crown….. what a splendid country for producing cotton.’ The Scot was a fantastic explorer but with no sense of ecological sustainability.
