Young seal at Valla
19 August 2013
Looking for fur disguised as stone, through sea swelling
dark sprawls of rock, the young seal off course is gone.
The sign still ‘simply resting’ on Middle Beach where the tide
unbuckles a pudenda shaped mound of pebbles. We examine
shells among them for form and function, drop them back,
find a small stone circle a child has assembled in the sand
with a dazzle of freshly painted Pigs Face, perhaps knowing
fortifications are doomed, even the dunes are eroding.
