22 July

The Tawny Frogmouth is back, not very well camouflaged. I took some video and the only movement was form bees in the wattle, except for a big colourful yawn I just missed.

A couple of Bazas (Crested Hawks), visited.

Pied Oystercatchers, Nambucca River

The birds are starting to mate and gather nest material. It’s still mid winter according to the ridiculous calendar. The mornings are cold, down to 5, but the days are sunny and up to 22. And the birds are singing in the forest (not the ones on this post). Is it possible that birds sing because they like to? This seemingly naive explanation is starting to look more and more like the truth. See David Rothenberg, Why Birds Sing: A Journey into the Mystery of Bird Song, Basic Books, 2005.
