Oyster Creek has been poisoned

Mark Graham's speech extract

Oyster Creek runs behind us and through Jagun, it is polluted with arsenic.

Oyster Creek in flood

On Sunday’s Bob Brown Foundation march in Bellingen, there were many good speeches, but the one by the wonderful local ecologist Mark Grham struck home.

About 12 years ago Mark Graham and Ashley Love met with Penny Sharpe, now Minister for Energy of New South Wales. They warned her that if logging proceeded at Little Newry State Forest it would be a disaster. There is an old arsenic and gold mine on scared Nunguu Mirral (Picket Hill, just behind our home) that will have leached the poison. Government advisors said it was low risk. Have those advisors been made accountable?

Here is an extract from Mark’s speech:

The ongoing logging of native forests is horrifying, and makes no sense whatsoever, and certainly not economically. Forestry Corporation keep doing the wrong thing and keep getting fined. They are a stain on the values of the Gumbaynggirr nation and all those who love the natural world.
