Beautiful Wonga Pigeons began appearing in our garden a few years ago. In Gumbaynggirr, galulam.
A year or two ago, one began climbing the 17 stairs to our front door, and hanging around and then skipping back down the stairs, not bothers to glide down or fly. They do prefer to walk apound the garden. (We don’t feed birds.) We have seen this behaviour numerous times.
I usually have to take their photograph through glass, their eyesight is excellent and they quickly trot off if I open the door.
This afternoon, one was sitting down in the driveway below. I got my camera and when it saw me, it adopted its ‘cryptic posture’, usually used when on the nest, keeping their patterned tail raised and facing any possible threat while peeping round to see what is going on.
Their loud coos are often heard in the adjacent forest, but they don’t call from our garden.
