Nyambaga leap year poem, 29 Feb

The mountains float behind the river, stitched
green with leaves, natural, no ditches, ramparts,

dry-stone walls, no hand-made, uncomfortable
divisions. Rivers and mountains are boundaries

between any differences. Past disagreements
often about women, held spears and shields.

Light pours into the endless mirror withholding
any resistance to the land now losing its ice.

Men are working on the roof of the RSL,
we will remember what, lest we forget?

Note. Yarriabini in the background is a sacred Gumbaynggirr Koala Dreaming site.
