NSW locks in the GKNP – great koala national park

At last! Sunday morning 7 Sept

De alerted me to the news by text at 4. Nothing in the papers until light filters through the trees at six am.

We celebrate the immediate ban on logging, long awaited, with a walk in our forest.

A King Parrot is whistling, the Nature Reserve just beyond the garden is smiling with sunshine, and noisy.

Oyster Creek is flowing, the rich blue flowers of the Hardenbergia vine has spread everywhere, we have been spreading seeds, and the red cedars are looking heathy.

We follow up with a walk on the beach. An Osprey flies low, right overhead.

‘NSW locks in great koala national park and brings in immediate ban on logging. Minns government to create one of the largest national parks in the state as forest advocates welcome ‘historic’ victory.’[i]

Of course, the NSW Nationals leader Dugald Saunders attacked the end of logging in State Forests. Harvesting in plantations will continue, and there are Koala populations in these areas. Harvesting needs to be done sensitively, and this has not happened in the past.

Dedicated Aboriginal rangers will be employed, as this area is a significant cultural landscape for Gumbaynggirr and Dunghutti peoples.

I am so happy with the news, just can’t smile to a camera

There were whales in the distance a pod of dolphins keeping a low profile.
